The Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys TD, has today (Wednesday) announced that she has commissioned an economic analysis of our screen based creative industries. The study will examine the economic impact and potential of the Irish film, TV and animation sector. The commissioning of the study is committed to in the Action Plan for Jobs 2016.
Following an open tender process, Olsberg SPI Ltd in association with Nordicity, have been selected to conduct the study. A steering group led by Minister Humphreys’ Department, with representatives of the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment, the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, the Irish Film Board and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland will liaise with the successful tenderer.
Speaking today Minister Humphreys said:
“The Irish audio visual sector is a growing industry with huge potential. 2016 has been a fantastic year for the film industry, with wide international acclaim for a number of Irish productions. Our animation sector has been going from strength to strength in recent years and the increasing demand for high quality TV productions also provides new opportunities.
“While we know that the audio visual sector supports thousands of jobs, I believe there is significant potential for further growth in the years ahead. It has also been a number of years since a comprehensive study of the sector was carried out. This economic analysis will consider the scale and economic contribution of the screen-based creative industries and examine its potential to expand further.
“The economic analysis will be carried out in less than six months and will then help to inform Government strategies and initiatives as we seek to enhance Ireland’s reputation as a home of creative talent.”

As Cork Film Festival continues to expand its focus on high quality Irish and International Documentary Cinema, the Industry Documentary Day a new flagship event brings together Irish and international industry leaders to discuss the landscape in which projects are conceived of, developed and distributed.
The packed day will address agenda-setting issues within the industry and explore the worlds of festival programming, the changing landscapes of commissioning and distribution and explore unique productions.
Doc Day seeks to inform, debate, inspire and connect through a range of panel discussions, case studies and talks which address the needs and interests of the documentary industry. Importantly, the day offers participants and industry members the opportunity to network with industry leaders, peers and key figures from the international market-place.
To close out the day, Kim Longinotto, a paragon of documentary filmmaking will deliver a keynote address.

The survey is a means by which Screen Training Ireland can collect further information on the profile of prospective new entrants to the industry, and gauge levels of interest in training initiatives for particular departments.

This year’s conference title is Investigative Journalism on the Digital Frontier – New Sources, New Tools, New Technologies, and New Audiences.
George Carey’s masterclass will focus on producing an independent documentary (storytelling, research, financing, production, distribution). The masterclass will include a screening of his film MASTERSPY OF MOSCOW – GEORGE BLAKE which was shown on BBC 4 Storyville last year and nominated for a Grierson Award.
Carey’s other credits include TERROR IN THE MALL, BABITSKY’S WAR and THE VALLEY which won the Prix Italia and the Golden Nymph in Monte Carlo; as well as his landmark documentary series RUSSIA with Jonathan Dimbleby, THE PLAGUE, CENTURY ROAD, VISIONS OF HEAVEN AND HELL AND TESTING GOD. Before becoming an independent producer Carey worked at the BBC where he was the creator and first Editor of Newsnight and later Editor of Panorama. After 20 years running a successful independent company, Mentorn Media, he returned to shooting and directing his own films, many in Russia.

Only 10 days to go till the South Eastern Creative Corridor Symposium which highlights emerging opportunities within the creative audio visual sector. On Thursday 3rd November many of the key players in the creative Industries will take part in a symposium organised by the South Eastern Creative Corridor initiative at Wicklow County Campus in Rathnew. This event, the first in a year-long programme to build capacity in the sector, will explore emerging opportunities in the Industry to build on the legacy of success of this sector within the South Eastern region.
Siún Ní Raghallaigh, CEO of Ardmore Studios will make the key note address at the event. Expert industry panellists on the day include Paul Young of Cartoon Saloon, Jim Duggan of Screen Scene, Naomi Moore of Windmill Lane Recording and Sarah Dillon of The Irish Film Board. Attendance at the event is open to all industry stakeholders whether they are an existing business in the sector or would like to start a new business or sell existing products and services into this vibrant industry. Oscar winning director Anders Walter and producer Kim Magnusson recently participated in the official launch event for the SECC initiative along with Hollywood superstar Zoe Saldana on 6th October.
The vision for the SECC programme encompasses a broad range of activities categorised as ‘Creative Industry’ that are related to audio visual production. Companies who sign up for the programme will take part in training workshops, networking events and mentoring meetings in each of the five counties. One of the most exciting elements of the programme is that there is an investment fund of €100,000 available to pitch for by successful applicants. Delivery of the programme will take place in each of the five partner counties with close collaboration between the Entrepreneurs Academy who are delivering the programme and LEO Wicklow, LEO Tipperary, LEO Wexford, LEO Carlow and LEO Kilkenny. The VFX and Animation Graduate Traineeship programme was launched on Saturday 22nd October in Dublin with a day-long symposium packed full of exciting talks on the latest creative and technological advances in the area of VFX and animation.
The Irish animation and VFX sectors are increasingly central to Ireland’s digital and creative economy, with animation alone employing more than 1,000 full time staff. The Graduate Traineeship Programme is targeted at developing industry-focused skills in a workplace setting, supported by award-winning studios such as Brown Bag Films, Cartoon Saloon, Boulder Media, and Screen Scene VFX among others. The programme includes on-the-job training and mentoring as well as additional specialist training delivered through Animation Skillnet and Screen Training Ireland.

Sharon Calahan joined Pixar Animation Studios in 1994 as lighting supervisor on the studio’s first feature film, “Toy Story.” She then served as director of photography on “A Bug’s Life,” “Toy Story 2,” and the Academy Award®-winning features “Ratatouille” and “Finding Nemo.” She worked in the same role on Disney•Pixar’s Golden Globe®-nominated feature, “Cars 2.” Most recently she was the visual designer, and director of photography for lighting on Disney•Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur.”
Calahan studied graphic design, illustration and photography. Following art school, she began her career as an art director for broadcast television and video production. Prior to joining Pixar, she was a lighting director at Pacific Data Images completing commercial work, longer format television, and graphics packages. She is a member of the cinematography branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and a member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC).
Richie Baneham studied classical animation in Ballyfermot College of Further Education. Following his degree, Richie relocated to LA where he worked across a number of smaller projects before being selected to work on Brad Bird’s ‘The Iron Giant’ in 1999. From there Richie worked on a number of other projects- including character animation for Gollum in “Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” and “Lord of the Rings: Return of the King”.
Following his work on “Lord of the Rings” Richie moved on to working on James Cameron’s “Avatar”. Alongside his three fellow visual effect supervisors on the project, Richie won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 82nd Academy Awards and the visual effects category at the 2010 BAFTAs. Richie is Animation Supervisor at Weta Digital.
Troy Saliba is an animation supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks, most recently overseeing Disney’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass”, directed by James Bobin. Previously, Troy served as animation supervisor on Disney’s “Oz The Great and Powerful” with director Sam Raimi and Sony Pictures Animation’s live-action/ animated feature, “The Smurfs” (3D).
In his ten years at Sony Pictures Imageworks, Saliba has served as the Animation supervisor on the family adventure film “G-Force” (3D), “Monster House” (3D) and “The Haunted Mansion”, and worked as a senior animator on the Academy Award-winning “Spiderman 2”, “Stuart Little 2” – winner of the Visual Effects Society award in 2003 for Best Character Animation in an Animated Motion Picture – and Imageworks’ first CG short – “The Chubbchubbs!” winner of an Academy Award® for Best Animated Short Film.
Prior to Imageworks, Saliba was Supervising Animator on the 2001 Paramount Pictures/ Nickelodeon Movies feature “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius” – one of the first animated films ever to be nominated for an Oscar. In 1995, Saliba served as Animation Director on the feature films “Anastasia” and Titan AE” for Fox Animation.
Simon Kay began his career in 1995 studying 2D classical animation at Ballyfermot Senior College, Dublin. Upon graduation, Simon moved into 3D computer animation, working at Acclaim Entertainment.
After a number of years working in the video game industry, focusing on motion capture, Simon went from mo-cap consumer to mo-cap provider, working as a Project Manager at Centroid Motion Capture. Building on this video games experience, Simon began working on a variety of Television, Video Game and Visual Effects projects.
In 2008, Simon joined Double Negative as Mo-cap Supervisor. Simon has worked on a number of projects with Double Negative as motion capture supervisor including the upcoming releases “Wonder Woman” and “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”, as well as recent releases “Star Trek Beyond”, “The Huntsman: Winter’s War”, “Ant-Man” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” to name but a few.
Mary Pike has over 12 years’ experience working in design and manufacture for film. She began working at Weta Workshop in 2007 and eventually ran the Modelmaking and 3D Modelling Departments as well as being the Assistant Workshop Supervisor. She was involved in projects such as “Avatar”, “Mad Max: Fury Road”, The Hobbit Trilogy, Elysium and “The Amazing Spiderman 2”.
She now specialises in 3D Modelling and Manufacture for Art Department, spending much of the last few years in this role on “Alice Through the Looking Glass” and “Star Wars Episode VIII”.
She is currently working in Ireland where she and her husband run their own design and manufacture company, The Workhouse.
Wouter Tulp is a freelance character designer. Since 2001, Wouter has been working professionally as an illustrator. Wouter is known for his versatility, and besides illustration on over a hundred children’s books, his caricatures and editorial illustrations have been published in national newspapers and magazines.
After having a successful career of more than a decade in the Netherlands, Wouter decided to shift his focus to character design. In 2014, Wouter began working as a character designer for the Dutch 2D feature “Trippel Trouble”, before moving on to The German CG feature “The Seventh Dwarf”, directed by the late Harald Sipermann. Since then Wouter has worked on many international feature film projects and is currently working for Sony Pictures Animation.
Chris Landreth started his career as a mechanical engineer, until 1990 when he decided to move into animation. Shortly after this, he joined Alias Inc. (Now Autodesk), where he created two CG-animated short films, “The End” and “Bingo”. Both films explored storytelling based on human psychology as much as photorealistic character animation. He calls this approach ‘Psychorealism’.
Chris continued this approach in his animated short “Ryan”. Produced by the National Film Board of Canada and Copperheart Animation, “Ryan” received over 60 international awards, including an Academy Award in 2005. Chris’ most recent film “Subconscious Password” (2013) premiered at the Annecy International Animation Festival, where it was awarded with the festival’s grand prize, The Annecy Crystal for Best Short Film.
In addition to filmmaking, Chris teaches ‘Making Faces’, an intensive course on Facial Animation, to schools, universities and animation studios worldwide.
Frazer Churchill began his career at the Moving Picture Company (MPC) where he became one of five artists who set up its new film division in 1994. From there, Churchill then went on to be a co-founding member of Double Negative in 1998, where the team worked on its first show, “Pitch Black”.
Since then, Churchill has been BAFTA-nominated for his work on “Children of Men” in 2006 and has worked as visual effects supervisor on a number of successful and visually stunning films such as “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”, “The World’s End” and the newly released “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”.
The Irish Film Festival London is delighted to announce A DATE FOR MAD MARY as this year’s opening night film. Based on Yasmine Akram’s play, A DATE FOR MAD MARY sees director Darren Thornton make an exceptional feature debut. Boasting stellar performances from its predominantly female cast, and in particular from lead actress Seána Kerslake, the film is a note-perfect snapshot of modern Ireland.
Kerslake plays Mary, who upon release following a six-month prison sentence, returns home to Drogheda, eager to reunite with best friend Charlene (Charleigh Bailey), for whom she is about to act as maid of honour. Annoyed by Charlene’s assumption that she won’t have a date for the wedding, Mary joins a dating agency, embarking on a series of disastrous encounters before events take an unexpected turn.
However, this is no formulaic rom-com; the focus instead is on female relationships and a character in transition who veers from violent to vulnerable, abrasive to funny, all brilliantly conveyed through Kerslake’s powerful, nuanced performance. The film was the joint-winner of the Best Irish Feature Film (alongside THE YOUNG OFFENDERS) at this year’s Galway Film Fleadh.
Speaking on the decision to open the festival with A DATE FOR MAD MARY Festival Director Kelly O’Connor says: “Opening this year’s festival with A DATE FOR MAD MARY was our goal since July when we first saw it in Galway. Huge Turnout for Film Industry Open Day in Limerick to Encourage Job Opportunities and Film and TV Production Activity in the Mid-West Region

Almost a thousand people turned out for the Screen Training Ireland and Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board (IFB) Film Industry Open Day in Troy Studios, Castletroy, Limerick on Saturday the 15th of October, which forms part of the overall strategy to grow film and television production activity in the Mid-West region.
“We are delighted to see such a high turnout and interest in this event. With the development of TROY Studios in Limerick, we believe there is a major opportunity to grow film and television production activity across the Mid-West region. As part of the IFB’s strategy announced early this year, job creation is at the core of our policy of growth for the audio-visual sector and training is a key element of this. This event has been organised with the aim of mapping current levels of skills across the region, in order to gauge the necessary training courses needed to allow people interested in working in the film and television sector to train and pick up additional skillsets” said James Hickey, Chief Executive, Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board.
“We are working closely with Innovate Limerick and the Education Training Boards in the region to build strong foundations for growth.
