Introduction to Prosthetics

Course Profile:

This two/three-day course will introduce participants to the process of making basic prosthetics, focusing on flat moulds and offering participants the chance to sculpt, mould and apply a simple wound prosthetic. An optional third day will focus specifically on life casting. The course will be structured as follows:

Day 1:

    • Introduction to flat mould
    • types of prosthetic materials, pros and cons of each and what adhesives are suitable
    • sculpting a wound in oil based clay
    • introduction to anatomy
    • texturing clay
    • prepping sculpt for moulding
    • moulding sculpt in silicone

Day 2:

    • cleaning out the silicone mould
    • releasing the mould
    • producing a prosthetic in gelatin or silicone
    • demo of prosthetic application
    • participants apply their prosthetics on each other
    • prepping the skin
    • gluing prosthetics
    • blending edges

Day 3:

    • Introduction to lifecasting
    • Facecasting — producing a plaster positive
    • Mixing and pouring plaster
    • Cleaning up a plaster positive
    • Demo in silicone lifecasting

Participant Profile:

This course is aimed at trainees and new entrants in the make-up department who wish to learn about Prosthetics. The course would also be of interest to those with a background in model-making.
