Screen Training Ireland and Animation Skillnet are delighted to support the Animation Base Camp – an initiative of Once Were Farmers and The Animation Centrifuge, in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation, Creative Scotland, and Midtnorsk Filmsenter.
The Animation Base Camp is a unique event for animation graduates, and emerging animation talent, designed to enable the transition from study to employment.
The 8-week workshop – from Monday 11th July to Friday 2nd September – will be hosted and supervised by Once Were Farmers in Glasgow with weekly critiques provided remotely by mentors from Sony Pictures Animation (HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA, CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS and the upcoming SMURFS: THE LOST VILLAGE).
There will be a combination of participants selected from each partner country (Scotland, Ireland, Norway – a maximum of 6 from each country) working in mixed teams across a range of feature pre-production roles. On a day-to-day basis the teams will be answerable to Once Were Farmers who will provide a Base Camp director, tutor and production manager to oversee the process. Each week the participants’ work will be submitted to Sony Pictures Animation and critiqued by a mentor in the relevant department.
A training bursary, equivalent to the UK minimum wage, will be provided to all the selected participants for the 8-weeks and affordable accommodation will also be available.
Applications are open for roles in either the Story and Editorial or Production Design departments. The available positions are:
Story & Editorial
- Production Coordinator
- Story Artists
- Editing Assistant
- Production Coordinator
- Environment and Prop Designers
- Visual Development – Painters
- Character Designers
Within an industry-based framework, participants will be assigned to teams, given a specific role in animated feature pre-production and each team will be provided with an industry mentor. The emphasis for all the participants will be on reactive teamwork and creative problem-solving, thus reflecting the true nature of commercial working environments. The Base Camp will focus on the use of traditional artistic and organisational skills in the context of digital animation production.
The outcome of the workshop will be the production of high quality ‘animatic’ sequences, accompanied by corresponding character and environment artwork which will greatly enhance the portfolios and experience of the participants. By reflecting the structure of the industry, the workshop will help participants develop professional creative, technical and production management skills.
Deadline for Receipt of Applications is Sunday 5th June 2016.
