Director Masterclass with Madeleine Olnek at Galway Film Fleadh 2018

Screen Training Ireland in association with the Galway Film Fleadh are pleased to announce Madeleine Olnek will be the subject of this year’s Directors Masterclass.

Madeleine Olnek is a a New York City based playwright and filmmaker. Her debut feature CODEPENDENT LESBIAN SPACE ALIEN SEEKS SAME premiered at Sundance 2011. It went on to screen at MoMA and The Viennale. It was also nominated for a Gotham award and had a theatrical run in LA and NYC.

Her second feature THE FOXY MERKINS, included screenings at Sundance 2014, BAM Cinemafest, Lincoln Center, and an NYC theatrical run at IFP. The film had its international premiere at the Moscow Film Festival, and was nominated for an Independent Spirit award. She was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship for her third feature film, WILD NIGHTS WITH EMILY, which premiered at SXSW in 2018.

Olnek was awarded best female short film director at Sundance in 2009, by LA’s Women In Film organization. Her award-winning and widely screened comedy shorts, COUNTERTRANSFERENCE (2009), and HOLD UP (2006), were official selections of Sundance. Her short film MAKE ROOM FOR PHYLLIS (2007) premiered at Sarasota. As a playwright, Olnek has been commissioned by Dixon Place, the Atlantic Theater, The Actor’s Theater of Louisville, and the Public theater. She is one of the authors of “A Practical Handbook for The Actor” (with a foreword by David Mamet), a widely used acting textbook.

Olnek graduated from NYU with a BFA in drama, where she trained in the acting conservatory program. She holds an MFA in playwriting from Brown University, which she attended on a full merit-based scholarship. She has an MFA in film from Columbia University, where she was awarded the prestigious William Goldman Screenwriting Fellowship.

The masterclass will be moderated by Gar O’Brien – (Former Fesitval Programmer for Galway Film Fleadh) – Having studied English and Psychology at UCC, Gar went on to complete a Masters Degree in Film Studies at the Huston School of Film and Digital Media in NUI Galway. He is currently appointed as a consultant on Galway 2020 project.

Olnek’s WILD NIGHTS WITH EMILY will screen on Wednesday 11th July as part of this years Galway Film Fleadh programme.

The masterclass costs €25 and will take place on Thursday 12th July from 10am – 1pm in the Galmont Hotel, Galway (Formally Radisson).
