Guth Gafa is celebrating its 10th birthday party 3rd-7th of August at Headfort House, Kells, Co Meath with a bumper festive programme packed with an extraordinary selection of films for all ages from all over the world.
Over 60 of the best and latest documentary films from over 25 different countries around the world, including 32 Irish Premieres and one World Premiere, will be screened over four days and the festival will welcome over 30 filmmakers from as far afield as Australia, Canada and Siberia.
Screen Training Ireland is delighted to support a Masterclass with award-winning filmmaker, Jerry Rothwell (DONOR UNKNOWN, HOW TO CHANGE THE WORLD, SOUR GRAPES) on Turning News Stories into Feature Documentaries which will take place on Saturday 6th August at 11am at the Festival Village at Headfort House.
Jerry Rothwell’s Masterclass will focus on how to take a story, which has been headline news, and give it the treatment of a documentary filmmaker? What are the kinds of news stories that inspire documentary makers to delve beneath them? What are the challenges a documentary maker faces when confronted with this task? How do you avoid the pitfall of simply retelling the same story? How do you persuade the main protagonists to talk?
For this year, Guth Gafa will convert a ballroom in the 18th Century Headfort House, an old aircraft hangar (used to house bi-planes for the Mad Max movie in the late 70s), an old Courthouse, a Stable Yard Theatre and an old Forge into five state-of-the-art digital cinemas in and around the magnificent Headfort House and in nearby Kells, Co Meath.
This year, the festival village includes a Virtual Reality Cinema (VRroom) to showcase some of the latest documentary films in VR technology, a first for any Irish film festival.
Among the special visitors to this year’s festival, is Irishman, Padraig O’Malley, the subject of The Peacemaker who has led an extraordinary career brokering peace in areas of conflict throughout the world.
As well as an incredible range of films there will be on site mouth watering food, live entertainment, and a great atmosphere in the most stunning surroundings.
Why not stop by (no cover charge) and wish us a happy birthday! You might even stay and watch a film!
